A health assessment is a longer, in-depth appointment where your doctor reviews your full medical and surgical history, medications, and the lifestyle factors that affect your health. It's a valuable opportunity to bring all your medical issues together in one place and identify any important health concerns with your GP — and a great chance for you to ask questions and catch issues early.
The following types of health assessments are funded under Medicare:
How do I prepare for a health assessment?
Before a health assessment is booked in, your GP will usually review your file during an initial consultation and, if necessary, refer you for some investigations. Please allow at least 7–10 days for the results to come back before booking the health assessment. This ensures your doctor has all the necessary information on the day.
What happens during the health assessment?
You'll see our practice nurse first for some measurements and a review of a few health questions. Once the relevant clinical information has been collected, your GP will go through it with you alongside your latest test results.
Are there any costs associated with a health assessment?
If you qualify for a government-funded health assessment, there is usually no cost for this service. Otherwise, the fee for an extended consultation will apply.
Please note that any blood or imaging tests referred by your GP may incur separate private fees, charged directly by third-party pathology or radiology providers.
